What will you do...(part 2)

One Chance — A Real Story of Courage, Compassion, and Instinct

What would you do if you had only one chance to act — and someone’s life depended on it?

Two years ago, I faced that exact situation. This is not fiction — this is a real story that took place one night near my home. As you read, imagine yourself in my place. How would you respond?

The Gutter Incident

It was late at night when my father came home and told me something unusual. He had seen three small piglets that had fallen into a deep gutter near our apartment. They were stuck and couldn’t get out. My father, always quick to act, placed some bricks inside the gutter like stairs, hoping the piglets would use them to climb out. Then he returned home, expecting them to make it out safely by morning.

But the next morning, when we both went to check on them, we saw a heartbreaking scene.

All three piglets were still inside the gutter, cold and scared. One of them was in very bad condition, lying in the dirty gutter water, too weak to move. He had spent the entire night suffering.

Without wasting time, my father gently lifted the weak piglet out. The gutter had concrete roofing on both sides, so my father and I stood on either side to block the piglets from running underneath and getting stuck again. But now, something unexpected happened.

A Mother’s Instinct

Suddenly, the mother pig appeared. She thought we were trying to harm her babies — maybe she believed we were butchers or strangers trying to steal them. She became aggressive, making it harder for us to rescue the others.

In that moment, one of the piglets slipped past us and ran under the concrete roofing. Another piglet started running wildly from one side to another. I quickly distracted the mother, guiding her away so my father could grab the running piglet and toss him out of the gutter to safety. That part of the rescue worked!

Then, our milkman happened to arrive after finishing his morning rounds. He stood in the middle with his empty milk can and joined our rescue efforts, using the can to block the piglets’ escape path.

My One Chance

Now came the most intense moment — my one chance.

The mother pig was growing angrier by the second. She was protective and charged at us, thinking we were hurting her babies. But just at the right moment, a car passed on the road between my father and me, and it briefly distracted the mother, giving us a window to act.

My father managed to catch the last piglet, but it wriggled free and ran — directly toward me. It passed our milkman, dodged the milk can, and made a dash for the concrete roof to hide. Without thinking, I lunged forward, grabbed it firmly, and with all my strength, threw it out of the gutter toward its mother.

All of this happened in just 7 seconds.

For a moment, I feared I might have hurt the piglet by holding it tightly. I even shouted during the action. But luckily, the piglet was fine — not injured, just scared. The mother pig, seeing all her babies safe, stopped charging. She gathered all her piglets and ran away from us.

We felt relief, pride, and joy. That day, we saved lives — and we were thankful for the milkman and the car driver whose timely presence made a difference.

A Final Thought

This experience made me wonder:
Why didn’t the piglet’s mother carry her babies in her mouth like a lioness does with her cubs?

The answer lies in the nature of animals. While lions and cats carry their young by the neck due to their instinct and anatomy, pigs do not have the same behavior or jaw structure for safely lifting their young. Instead, a mother pig protects her babies by standing guard, nudging them, or fighting off threats. Her love and instinct are just as strong — only expressed differently.

In Conclusion

Sometimes, life gives us just one chance to do something important. When that moment comes, don’t freeze. Act with courage and kindness — even if it’s risky, even if it’s scary.

You never know when that one act might save a life.

Take care of animals. Respect all living beings. And never underestimate the power of one moment.

Stay kind. Stay brave.
Stay safe 🐾❤️
